President's Letter: August 2008

Summer is virtually over and those of us with school age children cannot believe that it's gone and the school year has begun. I trust that all of you have enjoyed a wonderful summer.

For me, the year starts to speed up after Labor Day. Before you know it, it will be December 24th and I will still have a to-do list the length of Central Expressway! But for this week in August I'm still enjoying our family summer vacation and as usual I have dragged everybody half way around the world on a new discovery - this time - Alaska!

Picking Alaska for my next exploration was easy - I was able to find super cheap airline tickets way back in the spring and the idea of wearing thick sweaters and coats in August was VERY appealing!

Alaska has definitely always been for me the land of whales, bald eagles and glaciers. And tremendous seafood! My love affair with wild Alaskan king salmon & halibut cheeks is a love match made in heaven. The sheer majesty of this land has left me humbled and exceeded all expectations I might have had.

I've never been cruise ship material, and the last place I wanted to be to discover the "Last Frontier" was on a cruise ship. I have had great fun putting together an itinerary for us that included a lot of time spent pretending to be a local. That is what I love best, to go to the local spots and try and imagine living in this fast land.

My conclusion: What a magical place to visit, what a tough place to live! I cannot imagine selling real estate with just four hours of day light half of the year. But I can say with 100% of confidence that "I'll be back" - there is still plenty to discover and I might be crazy enough one day to volunteer at the great annual Iditarod Sled Race from Anchorage to Nome!

Dance hall special use permit

Now back to Dallas: I need all of your help in a matter that closely affects all of us. In September, the city planning commission will consider the permanent dance hall special use permit that was granted back in 1994-1995 to the owners of the Far West location. In this issue you will find a copy of the argument that I made in front of City Council earlier this summer. I need you to weigh in with your comments in a format that I can submit to the planning commission. Please contact me via e-mail or call me at 214-520-4433 to discuss.

Lakewood Green

Lastly, please join me in participating in our first Lakewood Green competition! Come share your "greening" ideas with the neighborhood and stand a chance to win big! Don't miss the details in this newsletter.

As always, thank you for all your support and don't forget to attend our next (and last for 2008) general meeting October 14th at Lakewood Elementary. We are putting together a very informative and fun agenda for you to come and enjoy.End of story
